There are no moral or ethical questions about the use of these types of stem cells. Those who are pro stem cell research believe that researching and using these stem cells can only lead to progress and medical discoveries that will help us all live longer, healthier lives.
The cons of stem cell research mostly refer to issues with embryonic stem cell research. Those who oppose stem cell research oppose the use of embryonic stem cells. The pros and cons of stem cell research swirling around this issue have led to much political debate.
The pros of embryonic stem cell research include their infinite possibility of curing disease. These are the only totipotent stem cells, meaning that they can change into any type of cell within the adult body. Other stem cells are limited. Another pro to stem cell research using embryonic stem cells is that they have a much lower incidence of rejection, and they are the youngest stem cells available for use in treatment.
The cons of stem cell research using embryonic stem cells surround the question of whether or not a human life is being lost when the embryonic stem cells are extracted. To use these cells for research, the embryo must be destroyed, and some feel that this is an ethical issue. Current embryonic stem cell lines used in research were not derived from an embryo conceived within the womb. Instead, the eggs were fertilized in a laboratory setting. This should answer questions for many about the pros and cons of stem cell research.
