What are Cord Blood Stem Cells?

Cord blood stem cells are stem cells taken from the blood left in the umbilical cord after delivery. After a baby is born, there is blood left in the umbilical cord and placenta, and, usually, this blood is just thrown away with the rest of the afterbirth. Cord blood contains stem cells.

Umbilical cord blood stem cells and placental stem cells are the youngest non-embryonic stem cells available, and they have definite advantages over adult stem cells. Cord blood stem cells have a lower incidence of rejection after transplant. Placental stem cells and umbilical cord stem cells also can be used in situations where they are less than a perfect match for the recipient because they have the ability to differentiate into other types of cells more easily. Because they are so young, they haven’t incurred any damage from aging. Cord blood stem cells are currently used in a variety of stem cell therapies.
