What are Adult Stem Cells?An adult stem cell is a cell that has no function located within the tissues of the adult body. The adult stem cell can differentiate, or change, into a specific type of cell within the body and take on the function of that cell type when circumstances provide the necessary ingredients for this action. Adult stem cells do not have a specific function; instead, they are used by the body to repair lost, diseased or damaged cells in different tissues and organs throughout the body. Adult stem cells are used in stem cell therapy treatments, and further research continues to discover new uses for these promising repair cells. Originally, it was believed that adult stem cells were limited in their ability to differentiate into many types of cells.
